The Speech Wizard Launches Their First App – “Articulation with The Speech Wizard”!
CAMARILLO, CA (April 26, 2014) – The Speech Wizard is pleased to announce their first app- Articulationwith The Speech Wizard to be released for the iPad in May 2014. This is the first of many innovative and interactive apps intended for speech and language therapy.
Articulation with The Speech Wizard app includes a variety of activities for: increasing speech clarity, assisting late talkers, children with speech delays/disorders, auditory discrimination delays/disorders, and phonological disorders.
Articulation with The Speech Wizard provides speech and language pathologists, parents, caregivers and educators with a fun, interactive, easy to use speech therapy application for children. It offers multiple activities for practicing English phonemes in the initial, medial, and final positions of words at three levels of speech: the word, phrase, and sentence levels. There are over 1000 real-life pictures implemented. Research indicates that child respond better to children’s voice so we felt we had no choice but had to implement a child actress voice recordings for our audio examples for a reference to the users.
“As a licensed and practicing Speech-Language Pathologist, I know the value and necessity of auditory training. Auditory discrimination skills with articulation and phonological disorders/delays are so crucial and is why I decided to include two activities just for this important and overlooked area in our Articulation app,” said Shawn Manvell, Founder, The Speech Wizard. “Auditory discrimination skills are the first component to being able to successfully remediate saying a speech sound correctly. The child must be aware and able to listen for their target sound before we should be expecting them to be producing it”.

I recently presented a training “Apps for Communication” for parents. After reading the feedback sheets, I am inspired to write this post and ma
ny more just like it. The comment was “I would really like more time spent on how to actually use the recommended apps you suggested”. So here it is…I am going to provide in great detail how I use one of my favorite apps for remediating speech & language disorders/delays. The beauty of this app is that it is super fun and great for all kids! The app is My Play Home Store. I first loved My Play Home, then this came about and I absolutely love this app too! Oh and I better mention that this app only costs $1.99.
The app includes a variety of scenes: Ice Cream Parlor, Grocery Store, Produce Market, and a Clothing Store. I use this app for vocabulary, following directions, articulation, sentence formulation, auditory discrimination, and pragmatics (social language) just to name a few. I really want to share a rather new Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) App that I like and that I have had great success with in my private practice. It is called AutisMate. Some of the things I like on the app are the scenes (instead of layered grid-displays), fantastic visual schedules, and most of all, the price! It is only $149.99. Also, to make things even better they have a Lite Version so you can get a feel for it and see if it will work for you before buying it! (more…)
It is easy to wonder and doubt if an app is appropriate or not to use as a speech therapy tool, especially now that there are over 1 million apps available. With a commonly heard motto “there’s an app for that”, you almost need to have a filtering system to help decide which apps to get and which apps to skip loading on your device. (more…)
One App that I use for many speech therapy skills is My PlayHome. There is a Lite version which is great so you can “try it before you buy it”.
This app can be used for so many skills including: Spatial Concepts, Following Directions, Articulation, Receptive and Expressive Language Skills…And More!!! (more…)

As children mature they do not always gain the control to produce speech sounds in a clear concise manner. Actually, along the way of mastering speech production, children often tend to make several mistakes. Depending on their age at which they are still making these mistakes and/or the amount of their mistakes they are making helps determine if it is truly a disorder or not. Each individual speech sound has a different age range as to when the child should make a particular sound correctly. (more…)
If you suspect that your child’s speech has a phonological or articulation disorder a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is a professional that analyzes and evaluates speech and language difficulties. You will want to contact your pediatrician (or your school district) and share your concerns with him or her. The pediatrician (or school district) will provide you with a referral to a speech-language pathologist to evaluate your child’s speech production and communication functioning. Your pediatrician (or school) and the SLP may recommend that you have a hearing evaluation to rule out a hearing loss which may be negatively impacting your child’s ability to perceive sound. The SLP will conduct an evaluation of your child’s speech sound productions, the oral mechanism, and often language development to determine their overall communication abilities. (more…)
